To buy or not to buy (un netbook)

  1. My apologies for answering in English – but my Spanish is non-existent and had it not been for your English Title I probably would not have been aware of the article, not tried to read it using google’s translation services.

Your article covers all the bases save one, that people need to be aware of the fact that Netbooks have no disk drive of any nature. They depend upon downloads from the Internet for «other software».

That being said, they are amazing little Internet Communications Devices. I purchased one for my daughter, and wished I had the finances to purchase one for myself.

If you are looking for something small, compact and powerful enough to browse the internet, access email, MSN (or whatever other Internet activity you wish) I highly recommend these.

I certainly are not gaming machines, nor coding machines, nor general purpose computers. But what they do, they do very very well.

My biggest complaint/grief is that companies are abusing the customer by only putting Linux out on the smallest of platforms with less memory and usually only a «static» or memorchip «hard drive». Usually at just under the price of a buffed up Windows XP machine with real hard drive.

The Netbook that we finally chose (after extensive research) was the ACER Aspire One – with a hefty hard drive and memory. My daughter is using it to survive on the net while her older «more powerful» laptop is dying, and she patiently acquires the funds for a Mac Laptop (to do her graphics and Videos that she used to do on her older XP laptop)

Hopefully this is helpful to your readers – again a great article. I only wish that I could respond in English for you.

    Rick

  2. Don’t worry, I understand it quite fine 🙂

Thanks for the comment. I have only to reply that, in fact, I explain that they have very little hard disks, and usually in the form of Flash drives (yes, they are «hard disks» as concept, but not based in spinning disks).

About using Linux instead of Windows and having much less memory, really is very logic. Currently, an XP OEM license for these products is very cheap; I can’t give you a precise number, but remember that XP is currently obsolete (due to Vista), and that, in the netbook world, it has to fight with Linux (a very important arena for Microsoft), which usually is given for free, so I suspect that the price is about 15-20$, if no less. Again, memory prices are currently very low, so increasing it from 512 megs to 1 gig means very little difference in price too. So you shouldn’t expect a big difference in price between a netbook with Linux or XP (and remember that a lot of shoppers only sees the final price, not the characteristics, so a difference of 20$ can be the key to buy the Linux one instead the Windows one).

  3. I have a acer aspire one, 1 gb ram, 160 gb hard disk, and I do not care about the brand or xp, linux or vista, what I care is have it ready when I need it. And it is cheap! do not expect a sony or apple performance, so if something goes wrong the waranty is ready to help you.

The only thing that I do not like is when I play a song and open a new window the song start to chic chic chic and choc choc choc and that makes me angry!!!!!!!!! Do not buy this computer for a mp3 player use!!!!

p.d sorry for my english, cheap schools. ja ja ja.
